Greyson is Eight

There's always one, right? There's always that one child who keeps you on your toes and questions every single thing you say and has answer for everything. That child for me is my middle child, Greyson.
 photo IMG_5823_zpswwd5ovuh.jpg

And while Greyson has always been that one child, this year, he's taken it to a new level. For instance, in the mornings when I go into his room to wake him up for school, he has requested that instead of just opening the door and saying his name, I should ring a small bell he has on his bedside table. Why a bell? Because he likes the sound it makes and it's much nicer to wake up to than my voice.

   photo IMG_5658_zpsv5rb4g2p.jpg

Also, Grey is no longer content getting dressed as soon as he wakes up. This takes up too much time, you see. He now puts on his clothes and socks for the next day right before he goes to bed. Greyson is all about efficiency. (And I am all about choosing my battles wisely.)

 photo IMG_2380_zpsbwhf8ljx.jpg

Greyson has never been a child who has been excited about school, but he recently informed me that he's probably not going to go to school longer than I make him, because he "already knows everything worth knowing."

I remember those frustrating toddler years when Grey didn't speak. He would hum along to songs on the radio and even make up a few of his own tunes. These days, he listens to the radio or watches YouTube videos and makes it his mission to learn every word correctly to every country song. He won't actually sing along to them if he thinks anyone can hear him, but once in a while I can catch him rocking out to some Zac Brown Band or Blake Shelton.

Speaking of YouTube, let me tell you about Greyson's favorite videos to watch. These include, Extreme Snowmobiling, Extreme Dirt Biking, Extreme Dirt bike Fails, and pretty much anything else with the word "Extreme" in front of it.

He took his first spin on a dirt bike this year, and hasn't been the same since. After school, he quickly drops his backpack and picks up his helmet and off he goes to get dirty and take chances. He is quite the daredevil and has made friends with the neighbor boys who share his love of the sport.

 photo IMG_2629_zps4oeb4t20.jpg

Between YouTube and the dirt bike, Grey still finds time to help out whenever he can. He loves mowing the grass on the riding lawnmower, and he loves anything involving power tools or building.

 photo IMG_2518_zpsdutavgag.jpg

Grey also stepped out of his comfort zone this year and joined the summer swim team. And while the other kids would listen to the instructors and patiently wait for their turn to practice a new stroke or kick, Grey would be doing underwater handstands or doing back flips or seeing how long he could hold his breath with just his face in the water. Somehow, though, he managed to learn the breaststroke, backstroke, and freestyle, and during races he made everyone laugh with his carefree jokester approach to competition.

This year, when I asked him what he wanted for his birthday, Grey gave me this list: a motorcycle, a 4-wheeler, a snowmobile, a trailer, and wood. What's the wood for? To make his own garage to store all of these toys, of course!

 photo IMG_6005_zpsernfizxf.jpg

As if all of these things aren't enough to make Grey the unique boy that he is, I'd like to mention one more thing: Food. Food is a very touchy subject for Grey. As with everything else in his life, he is very particular about what is for dinner, and exactly which parts of the dinner I will be making him eat. His favorite foods include salad, peppers, baked potatoes and fruit. He loves chicken and biscuits, as long as he doesn't have to eat the chicken, spaghetti and meatballs, but skip the meatballs, and a complete turkey dinner, without the turkey. In fact, if I'm in the mood to see Greyson flip out, I'll tell him we're having steak for dinner. I might as well tell him I'm serving him POISON.

So, I know I've said many times that Grey is a handful, but really, he wouldn't BE Greyson without all of his opinions and mannerisms. Someday, after I make him finish school, he's going to do great things. His ambitions, his determination, and his stubbornness will take him far. Oh, and by the way, if you ask him why he is the way he is or why he acts the way he acts, he's got an answer for you: He can't help it-that's the way he was born!

Happy 8th Birthday, Grey!  Momma loves you!

My Alayna

Have you met the girl with the crazy-curly blonde hair?  You know the one.  The one with the pink cowboy boots.  The one with the infectious laugh.  The one who was Elsa for Halloween and has since worn her Elsa dress at every opportunity.  The one at your party who would rather play with your pets than eat the cake.  The one who swears she isn't tired but falls asleep the minute you tell her she can stay up a little longer on the couch.  Yes, that girl.

 photo IMG_6939_zpsuesnuluf.jpg

That's my Alayna.

 photo IMG_6102_zpsq1qpro0h.jpg

When I was told that my fourth child would be a girl, I could hardly believe it.  Throughout my pregnancy, every time I had an ultrasound I made sure that they were SURE the baby was a girl.  At every ultrasound they assured me that, yes, she was definitely a girl.  I'd have to see her to believe it.

And then she was here.  SHE.  Alayna. My fourth child.  A daughter.  A sister.  More importantly, a sister for Emerson.

 photo IMG_8161_zpstc2uqkau.jpg

I grew up in a close-knit family-a big family.  A simple family dinner can quickly turn into an event on any given Sunday.  My sister, Melissa, is two years younger than me.  I can't remember life before her, and I can't imagine life without her.  We grew up sharing a room, staying up late giggling and making up fantastic stories.  We took piano lessons, and sang in the choir and in musicals together.  We visited each other in college and stayed out too late and drank too much.  We were each other's maids of honor when we got married.  We had babies together.  We run together.  We laugh together and we cry together.  She is my best friend, and I am lucky that I get to be her sister.

And now?  Now I have two daughters.  They share a room, often with their twin beds pushed together.  They stay up late giggling and making up fantastic stories.  Every so often, one of them will pull me aside and say, "Mom, we need a girl day."  And we go.  We get dressed up and curl our hair and put on lipstick and go. It makes me happy that they want to be together.  I hope they stay best friends forever.

Alayna went from five to six this year.  She very hesitantly started Kindergarten last Fall.  The first few months were rough.  Yes, I said months.  It was painful for her to go, and it was painful for me to make her go.  She was a shy girl who didn't know another child at the school, and she could identify about three letters in the alphabet.  Somehow, between September and June, Alayna became ALAYNA.  Somewhere, everything clicked.  That shy girl who had come home crying every day from school, now came bounding off of the bus with tales of Kindergarten and all of her wonderful friends.  And those three letters she knew?  Amazingly, those three letters not only turned into 26 letters, but into words and sentences and paragraphs and books.  That's right-SHE reads ME books at night before bed.

 photo IMG_7277_zpsnyc9qhzo.jpg

You might know that I am slightly competitive.  I think it's safe to say that Alayna also has some of that competitiveness in her.  I'd like to recommend that you not tell her no.  That word doesn't register in her brain, and you'll probably end up changing your mind.

 photo IMG_6652_zpsma12eify.jpg

A month ago, she joined the swim team, along with her three older siblings, and she couldn't even swim the length of the pool.  Three weeks later she was competing in the eight-and-under backstroke and completely amazed me.  When this girl sets her mind to do something, she does it.  From cartwheels to dirt bike riding, this girl is up for the challenge.

So, do you know that girl with the crazy-curly blonde hair?  I'm here to tell you that she is so much more than just that hair.  She is emotional, curious, brave, and challenging.  She is a swimmer, and gymnast, a tomboy, a princess, a friend, a sister, a daughter.  My daughter.

The Big 1-0

One of my very first blog posts was about Kindergarten orientation for Emerson.  She was five, she could spell her name, she knew all of her letters and shapes, and and she was ready to go.  But do you know what her favorite part of that day was?  Her freshly painted nails.  I should have known...

Here we are in 2015, and Emerson is a fourth grader.  She is above grade level in reading and math, gets straight A's on her report cards, and "is a pleasure to have in class."  But do you know what the most important part of her day is?  Making sure she has enough hair spray in her hair so that little piece in the front that likes to stick up stays stuck down the entire day.

If there was a definition to describe the year 2015, I think Emerson could sum it up.

And while she's very in the know about what's popular and what's not, Emerson still finds a way to put her own unique spin on things.

If there are three hundred orange pumpkins, she'll pick the only one that's not orange.

 photo IMG_5679_zpsgj4cvsgd.jpg

If she's cheering at a race, she'll paint her forehead instead of a poster.

 photo IMG_6302_zps5l1jlpck.jpg

If she needs a break, a dead body pose in the street is completely acceptable.

 photo IMG_0969_zpszvjwtovc.jpg

If no one's looking she'll sneak off to play with her dollhouse.

When my babies were babies, I used to wish for them to get bigger-big enough to sit up, big enough to crawl, big enough to walk, big enough to talk.  Last year, I was a bit sad to think that Emerson was halfway to 18.  This year, I feel differently.  Yes, she's growing up.  There have been minor battles over wearing lipstick to school, and talk of cute boys in class, and days when I've had to PRY her out of bed so she has time to eat breakfast before catching the bus.  Most of the time, though, she's pretty awesome.  We actually have a lot in common: we like the same music, we both LOVE sleep, and we're both a little crazy.

 photo IMG_6312_zpsvmzeqips.jpg

I am excited for Emerson's future.  She is a smart, confident, funny, caring girl.  I am excited for her to go to middle school, and high school, and to learn to drive, and to go to the prom.  And while all of those things can be terrifying in the moment, I know she will conquer each and every one of them.  I might miss her late night feeding sessions, and her chubby little toddler cheeks, and her toothless Kindergarten grin, but she has turned into a beautiful girl and I know that she will always be my baby.

Today is Emerson's tenth birthday, and we will celebrate everything that she is.
